DTC Analysis accepts 16-character VINs

A 16-character VIN can now enter the same DTC Analysis conversation as a 17-character VIN, with guided confirmation and manual vehicle identification when lookup is incomplete.

Enter the vehicle identifier without restarting diagnosis

DTC Analysis accepts both 16-character and 17-character VINs. A shorter supported identifier no longer stops intake solely because it has fewer than 17 characters.

Vehicle lookup still runs first. When the lookup returns usable information, those details help identify the vehicle for the diagnostic conversation. Automatic identification is not guaranteed for every VIN.

Confirm a VIN that the lookup cannot identify

If a 16-character VIN cannot be identified, the assistant asks whether the entered VIN is complete and correct. The Yes and No choices determine the next step:

  • Choose Yes when the supplied identifier is correct. The conversation then collects make, model and year, with trim available as an optional detail.
  • Choose No when the identifier needs correction. Enter the corrected VIN so lookup can be attempted again.

This confirmation keeps an incomplete database response separate from an incorrectly entered identifier. The technician supplies the missing vehicle context rather than having the assistant assume it.

Continue with codes and symptoms after identification

Once vehicle details are established, provide the diagnostic trouble codes, observed symptoms or relevant history, and the requested report language. The existing conversation remains the place to complete that intake.

The 17-character workflow remains available through the same tool. Use the Help control beside the composer if you need guidance while completing vehicle identification.
